ETD has launched a new proposal for a Group Sponsored Project. The proposal is entitled ‘CRACKFIT – Defect Assessment Tool for Boilers/Pressure Vessels & Turbines’. 

Crackfit© is the ETD’s commercial procedure and software for assessing cracks in pressure vessels, piping and standard fracture mechanics specimens, both at low and high temperature. It is based on the prototype initially developed with the support of the European Commission and European industry. The commercial version was developed by ETD as a joint venture in collaboration with the European industry and independently verified by experts. Crackfit carries out crack and life assessment both deterministically and probabilistically - probably the most advanced procedure for probabilistic crack assessment. Crackfit significantly reduces the time required to carry out assessment, in some cases from weeks to days!  Crackfit comes with an optional crack initiation and growth database for base metal, HAZ and welds and for many materials of interest to industry.  It deals with defects such as lack of fusion / penetration in welds (defects at weld toes), internal and external surface emerging or embedded defects in straight pipes and pipe bends, defects at stress concentrations such as sharp corners (T-pieces, nozzles), defects in plates etc.

The software is user friendly for industry engineers who would like to carry out defect assessments without having to go through the different established codes or country / in-house defect assessment practices. Procedures including BS7910, the French code RCC-MR A16 and the European procedure ‘HIDA’ are available as software options. The software allows for failure analysis (fast fracture, plastic collapse and ligament rupture) and the evaluation of damage mechanisms such as creep, fatigue, and creep-fatigue interaction.

ETD's Invitation to Join New & On-Going Group Sponsored Projects (GSPs)

In response to the needs of the international industry, ETD Consulting regularly launches new multi-client projects which are open to all.

ETD has excellent expertise through its in-house R&D, plant service/technical consulting and project management experience and links with plant manufacturers, plant operators, service providers and researchers from around the world. The company is thus in an ideal position to conduct such projects on behalf of project partners/sponsors and bring together plant experience from best run plants and the latest technology development in Europe, Japan, USA and elsewhere.

The benefit of joining these GSPs, in which costs are shared, is that each participant gains the data and results of the whole project at a fraction of the total project cost. All work is carried out by ETD and its expert staff/ consultants but the sponsors determine its direction.

ETD Now Provides “Obikou” High Temperature Pipe Strengthening Service

As a result of a partnership agreement with a Power Company in Japan, ETD now offers this unique patented technology service worldwide (including Japan) for the creep life extension of high temperature, high pressure pipelines, especially those already showing creep damage. 

“Obikou” is an on-site service for power, process and other high temperature plant and has shown to achieve creep life extension by a factor of about 4. It simply involves quickly reinforcing a potentially vulnerable or creep damaged pipe with multiple layers of thin high-temperature alloys strip that is wound/wrapped around a pipe thus halting/ reducing the development of creep damage. Launch of a new Group Sponsored Project on Aberrant P91 Inspection, Repair and Life Extension

ETD has launched a new proposal for a Group Sponsored Project. The proposal is entitled 'Early Stage Damage Inspection, Repair & Life Extension of Aberrant P91 Components'. This newly launched proposal is aimed at testing some of the NDE techniques, tried and established in the earlier project, on the P91 aberrant microstructures, It is also looking at testing some newer NDE techniques developed since the start of the earlier project, and, also look at new ideas and technologies for the strengthening and life extension of P91 components which have either developed creep damage or contain aberrant microstructures.

As this is a Group Sponsored Project (GSP) costs are shared between a number of sponsors so each pays only a fraction of the total project cost.
